That's right. On the 15th of January, two extraordinary guest speakers will come to NUS and impart their entrepreneurial wisdom. Both accomplished in the intelligentsia, both diligent practitioners of their entrepreneurial ideals. One Dr. Francis S C Yeoh, CEO of the National Research Foundation, the $360m National Framework for Innovation and Enterprise (NFIE), will deliver us the first-hand information about the National Research Foundation, and its various efforts in enterprise development. And one Dr. Jerry Cao, SMU professor and founder of Asian VC & PE Institute, will centre his presentation around entrepreneurship and finance, discussing various practical aspects of financing entrepreneurship.

Guest Speakers:
Dr Francis S C Yeoh is the Chief Executive Officer of the National Research Foundation (NRF) of Singapore. The NRF was set up in Jan 2006 under the Prime Minister’s Office to coordinate and fund strategic R&D programmes and promote research, innovation and enterprise with an initial 5 year budget of $5 billion. For the next 5 years, NRF would operate with a budget of $4b.
Before joining the NRF, Dr Yeoh was for 5 years the CEO of a startup company operating in the internet and mobile technology space.
Dr Yeoh was previously the Assistant Chief Executive of NSTB - the National Science & Technology Board (now A*STAR), which was responsible for developing Singapore’s capabilities in science and technology.
From 1995-98, Dr Yeoh headed the Information Technology Institute (ITI), a 200 strong IT R&D organisation which later became Kent Ridge Digital Labs or KRDL. ITI & KRDL were known for spinning out numerous high tech companies, with venture capital or angel funding.
In a career spanning more than 25 years, he has always been deeply involved in R&D, technology and entrepreneurship. Dr Yeoh is an adjunct professor at the National University of Singapore for many years, teaching a graduate course on high tech entrepreneurship.
He holds a B Sc (1st class Honours) in Systems Engineering, a PhD in telecommunications, both from Loughborough University, UK and a Masters in Management from MIT. He is a senior member of the IEEE and the Singapore Computer Society.
Dr.Jerry Cao is Assistant Professor of Finance at the Singapore Management University and the founder of Asian VC & PE Institute, a research and consulting organization for Private Equity Investment in Asia. Jerry’s research interests span empirical corporate finance and private equity. One of the key questions he addresses is the role private equity firms in LBOs and RLBOs. His research articles have been published in top finance journals such as the Journal of Financial Economics and the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, and his studies on private equity have been widely cited by the Wall Street Journal, Business Week, Forbes, and other financial journals. He is a member of the American Finance Association and the Western Finance Association. Jerry holds a B.A. in Economics from HUST, an M.A. in Economics from the University of Western Ontario, and a Ph.D. in Finance from Boston College.
